HONDA CIVIC ENGINE SWAP

Honda is a well known brand that produces a whole variety of products right from econoboxes to mean machines. As is the hot-rodding fashion, Honda enthusiasts have started integrating the most powerful engines with the lightest and affordable chassis. You can easily interchange different Honda engines and chassis. So, a 200+ horsepower H-series or high B-series engine could be put into any chassis coming out of Honda factory.

If we talk about the B-series Honda DOHC engines, you would find that they are amongst the most popular engines coming out of Honda. They show high performance and hover from 126 hp to 200 hp. Some of the models actually clock over 8000 rpm. The best thing about these engines is that they can go high performance modifications without having any effect on their reliability. The engines come in 1.6 lt, 1.7 lt, 1.8 lt, and 2.0 lt models. VTEC or variable valve timing and electronic lift control is optional with these models. Later models have come with some upgrades like modifications to the intake valves and ports and piston tops. Also the dipstick has been moved away from the exhaust manifold.

Engine Swaps

When it comes to engine swaps, there is no one better than the B-series engines. A visit to Acura Integras would show you various models. Similarly, JDM Hondas and Japanese junkyards also present a lot of variety. As such a large number of such engines are imported from Japan every year. If you are comparing JDM engine with USDM engine, then understand that JDM engine has slightly higher horse power rating than the USDM ones. B18C1 model which is JDM equivalent generates 10 horsepower more than its USDM equivalent. And yes, the writing harness is at the right hand drive as per the Japanese uses as compared to the left hand drive here in the U.S. or Canada. Yes, it is a minor discomfort but the wires can all fit if you release some of the mounting clips.

One of the most popular swaps is the fitting in of B-series engines in Civics. And yes, this engine can't be fit in to the transaxle that comes with other engines and as such you would have to swap both the engine and the transaxle. And by the way, when we say an engine swap, we actually mean the entire power-train (engine and transaxle) where front wheel drive cars are concerned.

And yes, you would also have to swap the ECU or the engine computer. And you can get a wide range of ECUs in the market some a little bit tweaked and some greatly modified. And if you are thinking of getting a VTEC engine installed, you should get some additional wiring done.
