Mitsubishi cars

Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is the 5th biggest automobile manufacturer in Japan and the 13th biggest in the world (as per unit sales). It is a part of the Mitsubishi Keiretsu that was one of the largest Japanese industrial groups.

The three red diamonds comprising the logo of Mitsubishi Motors Corporation is more than a century older than the company and was used across all the corporations included in the keiretsu. The logo was selected by Yataro Iwasaki, Mitsubishi's founder, as it reminded him of his first employer, the Tosa Clan, and also because his family crests was in the form of three stacked rhombuses. The name itself is made from mitsu (three) and hishi (waster chestnut, used in Japan to signify a rhombus or a diamond).

In 1988 Mitsubishi Motors went public. It was the last of the 11 Japanese auto-manufacturing giants to do so. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries remained the major stockholder in the company by retaining 25% of the holdings. Chrysler increased its holdings to 20%. The capital raised by going public enabled Mitsubishi to expand all over Southeast Asia and also to pay off a significant portion of its debts.
