Radar detectors are of three types. The corded units, the cordless units that run on batteries and may be mounted on the visor, dash, or windshield, and the remote units that are mounted permanently in concealed locations.
These are the oldest type of detectors and also the most popular. They plug into the car's cigarette lighter or the fuse box. They are typically placed on the windshield with suction cups.
There are several advantages of these detectors over cordless and remote models. The first advantage is that they are easy to install and can easily be moved from one car to another.
These models can detect all bands. Radar manufacturers are always looking to beat the radar detectors and there are always new technologies to help them in this task. Unlike corded detectors, cordless models have to shift their power between on and off with millisecond timing. This creates a problem as these radars are not able to detect newer radar guns.
Corded detectors also do not suffer from the persistent problems with all things cordless. They do not require you to check and replace the batteries. You never know with a cordless model when you are going to run into trouble because of weak or dead batteries.
Unless you have some kind of deep rooted dislike for cables it is suggested you stick with corded detectors. Cordless models offer no great advantage. Since they run on batteries they switch on and off with millisecond timing to provide longer running time without battery change.
Unfortunately, this millisecond switching creates problems like a loss of range and sensitivity. Cordless detectors are 30% less effective than corded models. Most models of cordless detectors are not able to catch POP radar.
Plugging a cordless radar into a power socket will not help because they are designed to run on batteries.
In case you want to do away with the wire and still avoid using batteries then you should try to hide the wire behind the molding and connect the corded radar detector to the fuse box of the car directly instead of connecting to the cigarette lighter.
However, if this patch job does not satisfy you then you should go for the high-end cordless models.
There are many states and locations in the United States and Canada where radar detectors are illegal. Being discovered with one in possession can lead to severe penalties. The remote mounted radar detectors are quite well hidden. Perhaps the added advantage here is that they are equally hidden from law enforcement as they are from thieves.
Of course all this comes at the most obvious disadvantage of a higher price. The price is actually affected by the modules used during installation. Some cars have a remote mounted antenna behind the grill, two laser antennas in front and rear, and finally a controlling device and a display module.
Remote mounted radar detectors are not easy to install and are done by professionals. When you buy a remote mounted radar detector you should look for an install card. This is often prepaid so you can have the installation performed for free.
